Utah is asking a judge to dismiss a legal challenge to its ban on transgender kids who want to compete in youth sports. Attorneys for the state argued this week that two unnamed transgender girls lack standing to challenge the law in court, in part becase they haven't been harmed by it. They allege one girl would be academically ineligible to compete in volleyball this upcoming fall regardless of the ban and say another won't be eligible to try out for high school girls' swimming until next year. Challenges to Utah’s ban parallel other cases in states such as Idaho, West Virginia and Indiana.

While thrilled to have signed two-time Stanley Cup champion Ondrej Palat in free agency, Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald briefly felt star attraction Johnny Gaudreau would be returning to New Jersey. It didn’t work out that way. “Johnny Hockey” chose the Columbus Blue Jackets over his home state and the Devils gobbled up Palat hours later with a five-year, $30 million contract. Speaking Fitzgerald says he has no regrets discussing opening days of free agency. He put his best offer on the table in front of Gaudreau and felt good about it. Gaudreau opted to take a little more from Columbus.

The union representing concession workers at Dodger Stadium says it won't strike during Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game and its related events. Unite Here Local 11 and concessionaire Compass Group and its subsidiary Levy Restaurants have made what the union says is “substantial progress” in contract negotiations this week. As a result, there won't be a strike during the All-Star events that begin Saturday and culminate in the game on Tuesday. Union spokesperson Maria Hernandez says both sides look forward to a successful event and continued negotiations. The union had earlier voted to authorize a strike.

An attorney representing 30 women who have accused the Houston Texans of turning a blind eye to allegations that Deshaun Watson was sexually assaulting and harassing women during massage sessions says they have settled their legal claims against the team. Tony Buzbee, the women's attorney, says the terms of the settlements reached between each of the women and the Texans are confidential. Buzbee says while only one of the women had filed a lawsuit against the team, the others had also intended to make legal claims against the Texans before the settlements were reached.

Auston Trusty was loaned to second-tier Birmingham City from Arsenal for the 2022-23 season before the 23-year-old defender played his first game for the Gunners. Trusty transferred from Colorado to Arsenal in January, and then was loaned back to the Rapids and played 16 league matches for Colorado this season. Both Arsenal and Colorado are owned by Stan Kroenke. Trusty played for Philadelphia in 2018-19 before moving to Colorado.

Max Scherzer misses hitting. He misses pitching to pitchers. Yet the New York Mets right-hander is just fine with the full-time addition of the designated hitter to the National League as of this season, nearly 50 years after the American League adopted it. The three-time Cy Young Award winner says the biggest benefit of the change is that all of Major League Baseball is under one set of rules. All games include a DH in the lineup. The ballot for Sunday’s All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium included a DH for the NL. And runs per game are up in the NL in 2022.

Welcome to The World Games, a sort of Island of Misfit Toys for a fascinating array of sports that are on the outside looking in at the Olympics. The 11-day, Olympic-style competition is being held in the United States for only the second time, at venues throughout Birmingham, Alabama. From air sports to wushu  — this is a showcase for sports that someday hope to shine on the Olympic stage. For Birmingham, it's a chance to show how far the city has moved from its ugly racial history by welcoming sports that few locals have ever seen — or understand.

The Panthers suffered their second straight five-win season under coach Matt Rhule in 2021, leaving him on the hot seat as he enters his third season. Carolina again struggled with poor offensive line play and the inability to find stability at the quarterback position. Carolina started the offseason attempting to acquire Deshaun Watson. But after losing out to Cleveland. the Panthers traded for former Browns signal-caller Baker Mayfield, who will battle it out with Sam Darnold for the starting spot at training camp.

Shortly after last year’s Olympics, the urine samples of some six dozen athletes came back with traces of a banned stimulant. Career-altering penalties loomed. But they were avoided thanks to some nimble sleuthing by antidoping scientists in the U.S. and Germany. The scientists discovered the stimulant could be found in an ingredient present in an over-the-counter sunscreen. Increasingly sensitive instruments designed to detect banned substances have the ability to pick up increasingly minuscule amounts of those substances in an athlete’s system. In some cases, athletes ingest them intentionally. But in a growing number of instances, the banned drugs enter their systems in completely unintentional ways. Like through sunscreen or contaminated food and prescription drugs.

Josh Allen's emergence as one of the NFL's top young quarterbacks gives the Buffalo Bills hope for the Super Bowl in this upcoming season. The biggest question mark facing the two-time AFC East champs entering training camp is how smoothly Allen and his high-powered offense can transition under first-time coordinator Ken Dorsey. The Bills promoted Dorsey from QBs coach to take over after Brian Daboll was hired to coach the New York Giants. On defense, all eyes are on how much offseason addition Von Miller can improve what was a middling pass rush. The Bills open camp in Pittsford, New York, on July 24.

The Houston Texans look to Davis Mills as their answer at quarterback after finally moving on from Deshaun Watson in a trade to Cleveland this offseason. Coach Lovie Smith takes over after David Culley was fired after just one season where the team went 4-13. He takes over a team that looks to improve with a boost from multiple high draft picks led by CB Derek Stingley, the third overall pick in the draft, and OL Kenyon Green, chosen at No. 15. RB Marlon Mack joins the team, hoping to help turn around a running game that ranked last in the NFL in each of the past two seasons.

Tiger Woods may have played his final round of a British Open at St. Andrews. He received an emotional sendoff worthy of the occasion. Woods shot a 75 and missed the cut. But that's not what Friday was all about. Crowds got larger and louder as he neared the end. Woods crossed the Swilcan Bridge and did not stop to pose like other legends before him have done. He kept walking. Woods says this will not be his last British Open. He just doesn't know if he'll be healthy enough to play when it returns to St. Andrews.

Talk of the New England Patriots returning as an AFC juggernaut post-Tom Brady was a bit premature. After a seven-game win streak late in 2021, the Patriots saw a quick end to their season in the wild-card round. They addressed some holes at receiver and on the offensive line this offseason, but the unit as a whole will be undergoing a transition after former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left to coach Las Vegas. Defense is also in the spotlight entering training camp as the Patriots look to replace cornerback J.C. Jackson, who left in free agency.

England women’s coach Sarina Wiegman has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss their match against Northern Ireland on Friday at the Women’s European Championship. The host nation has already advanced to the quarterfinals with a game to spare after an 8-0 rout of Norway on Monday. Assistant coach Arjan Veurink will guide the team for Friday’s final Group A game in Southampton against already eliminated Northern Ireland. Wiegman is in isolation. England’s quarterfinal is scheduled next Wednesday against Germany, Spain or Denmark.

The second game of the New York Mets’ four-game series at the Chicago Cubs has been postponed by rain. It was rescheduled for a split-doubleheader on Saturday. The NL East-leading Mets rolled to an 8-0 victory over the lowly Cubs on Thursday night. Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo homered, and Carlos Carrasco pitched six effective innings in New York’s third win in four games.

Former world champion Mads Pedersen produced a powerful burst of speed in a three-man sprint to claim his first stage win at the Tour de France. The one-day classic specialist from Denmark attacked from a group of six riders with 12 kilometers left to drop three rivals. Pederson perfectly timed his final move about 250 meters from the finish to leave his opponents in his wake. Following two brutal days of racing in the Alps, race leader Jonas Vingegaard enjoyed a quiet day in the pack. He was well protected by his Jumbo-Visma teammates. Pedersen was crowned world champion in 2019. He also won Gent-Wevelgem two years ago but had never tasted victory in a Grand Tour.

With 14-year starter Matt Ryan now in Indianapolis, a quarterback competition will be the highlight of the Atlanta Falcons training camp. Marcus Mariota is the favorite, but rookie Desmond Ridder impressed coach Arthur Smith in the team's minicamp. Mariota needs to prove he can provide the stability expected from a veteran. The Falcons finished 7-10 in Smith's first season and will try to snap a string of four straight losing seasons. The Falcons have avoided the word “rebuild” but general manager Terry Fontenot says the team was “taking it on the chin” financially in 2022 after the Ryan trade.

Tom Brady cited “unfinished business” as one of the reasons for ending a brief retirement, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers remain committed to surrounding the seven-time Super Bowl champion with everything he needs to win an eighth ring. The quarterback's announcement that he was returning for a 23rd NFL season helped general manager Jason Licht retain several key components of a talented roster — moves including a trade to bolster the offensive line and the signing of receiver Russell Gage that could enhance the chances for another deep playoff run. Brady turns 45 in August, but is comping off a season in which he led the league in completions, attempts, passing yards and touchdowns.

With several big-name additions on both sides of the ball, the pressure will be turned up on coach Nick Sirianni this season as the Philadelphia Eagles clearly have the pieces to contend in the NFC East. With 19 starts under his belt, quarterback Jalen Hurts now has the experience. With A.J. Brown, he also now has a bona-fide NFL wide receiver that should allow Sirianni to open up his playbook in 2022.

The Chicago Bears are entering a new phase after general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus took over for the fired Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy. The sweeping changes came after Chicago went 6-11 to miss the playoffs for the ninth time in 11 years. The Bears also traded star pass rusher Khalil Mack to the Los Angeles Chargers and parted with former top receiver Allen Robinson, who signed with the Los Angeles Rams. Chicago is counting on quarterback Justin Fields to take a big step coming off a shaky rookie season. That could hinge on how a revamped offensive line holds up.

New quarterback Carson Wentz will be the focal point when the Washington Commanders open training camp. Wentz will finally get a chance to build chemistry with Terry McLaurin after the top receiver missed offseason workouts while mired in contract negotiations. Wentz is supposed to stabilize football's most important position after years of it being a revolving door with Washington. Coach Ron Rivera goes into his third camp with not even the illusion of a QB competition. That's by design with expectations on Rivera and the Commanders to contend for a playoff spot this season after going 7-10 last season.

The Detroit Lions are kicking off their second training camp with coach Dan Campbell. The Lions look as if they should be better on offense with quarterback Jared Goff returning for a second season. Goff is behind a solid line with a good pair of running backs, a standout tight end and an improved receiving group. Detroit’s defense still looks shaky and that might lead to a fifth straight season with double digits in losses. The Lions lost their first eight games last season under Campbell and rookie general manager Brad Holmes, failing to win until Week 13.

A late-season collapse kept the Indianapolis Colts out of last season's playoffs. They don't plan to make the same mistake twice. While the cast has changed, the goal has not. Indy intends to make a deep postseason run, this time with an overhauled roster. Matt Ryan replaces Carson Wentz at quarterback. Former Pro Bowlers Stephon Gilmore and Yannick Ngakoue have been added to the defense. And new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley believes his group can be one of the league's best. If it all works, Indy could return to the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

German Bundesliga club Augsburg says it has called off a friendly match with Qatari club Al-Duhail after criticism from fans. Augsburg was due to play Al-Duhail during a training camp in Austria on Sunday but has now canceled those plans and will play fellow German club Schalke instead. One influential Augsburg fan group had branded the game “sportswashing” of Qatar’s image and highlighted human rights concerns over the treatment of women, LGBTQ people and migrant workers.

Two-time reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers will be getting accustomed to plenty of new receivers as the Green Bay Packers open training camp without wideouts Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Green Bay's offense also will have a new coordinator since the Denver Broncos hired away Nathaniel Hackett. Former Packers offensive line coach Adam Stenavich is the new coordinator. The Packers are seeking a fourth straight NFC North title and their first Super Bowl berth since their 2010 championship season.

The Dallas Cowboys are still trying to end a stretch of more than 25 years without a deep playoff run. It will be on their minds again when they report to training camp in California later this month. The defending NFC East champs lost a home wild-card game to San Francisco. Quarterback Dak Prescott is hoping for a healthy camp a year after a shoulder injury sidelined him almost the entire preseason. The offensive and defensive lines will be worth watching in camp. That includes who will start opposite defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.

The Tennessee Titans are trying to repeat their success as the AFC's No. 1 seed a year ago despite using an NFL-record 91 players because of injuries. That included losing Derrick Henry for nine games to a broken right foot. They have won back-to-back AFC South titles with Mike Vrabel the reigning AP NFL Coach of the Year. But the Titans lost to eventual AFC champ Cincinnati 19-16 in the divisional round. They haven't won a playoff game since January 2020. The main focus in training camp will be improving the offense with a new passing game coordinator. Ryan Tannehill also has several new playmakers and a healthy Henry.

New Jaguars coach Doug Pederson is trying to help his players “heal” after last year's tumultuous season and hoping to build a winning culture that could lead Jacksonville out of the AFC South cellar for the first time since 2017. Pederson and the Jaguars will hold training camp at a nearby high school while they build a new practice facility. The daily bus rides could bond a team that has lost 29 of its past 33 games. But thanks to several high draft picks and some decent free-agent signings over the past two years, the Jags seemingly have enough talent to, at the very least, be more competitive each week. And if second-year QB Trevor Lawrence develops under offensively savvy Pederson, they could be a dark-horse contender in a watered-down division that lacks star power.

The Chiefs traded wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins in their biggest move of the offseason, replacing him with Marquez Valdes-Scantling, JuJu Smith-Schuster and rookie Skyy Moore. If that works, Patrick Mahomes and Co. could be headed to a fifth straight AFC title game. On defense, the Chiefs need to put more pressure on the quarterback in a division featuring the Chargers' Justin Herbert, the Broncos' Russell Wilson and the Raiders' Derek Carr to reach a third Super Bowl in the last four seasons. They flopped in last year's AFC championship game, blowing a 21-10 halftime lead in an overtime loss to the Bengals.

The Seattle Seahawks begin training camp looking to rebound from the worst season of Pete Carroll's tenure and led to an offseason of massive changes. Seattle went 7-10 last season and missed the playoffs for just the third time in Carroll's tenure. That led to an offseason which saw franchise quarterback Russell Wilson traded to the Denver Broncos, leaving the most important position on the field as Seattle's biggest question entering training camp. Geno Smith and Drew Lock are the candidates to be the starting QB with Smith the leader after the offseason program. Seattle's other big need is contract certainty for WR DK Metcalf after he held out of minicamp while seeking an extension.

Coming off five consecutive losing seasons, the New York Giants have gone to Buffalo to fix things. They hired former Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen to run the front office and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to lead the team. They take over a franchise that was 4-13 last season. Daboll needs to fix the offense and get quarterback Daniel Jones and running back Saquon Barkley going. He got a jump on it by adding big tackle Evan Neal with the No. 7 pick in the draft. New D-coordinator Wink Martindale and linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux, No. 5 overall pick, can make a good defense better.

The Denver Broncos have undergone a major makeover this offseason. It began with Nathaniel Hackett replacing Vic Fangio as head coach and continued with the acquisition of star quarterback Russell Wilson from the Seahawks in exchange for a bevy of players and draft picks. Then, the heirs to the Walmart won the bidding for the franchise, pledging a record $4.65 billion for the team that's been in the Bowlen family since the 1980s. Expectations are high that the Broncos will return to their winning ways after five consecutive losing seasons and a six-year playoff drought.

Welcome, new coach Mike McDaniel. The Miami Dolphins are coming off another season where they didn’t make the playoffs. The expectations are clear this season and the Dolphins plan to end that postseason drought. The team made some huge offseason moves highlighted by the acquisition of wide receiver Tyreek Hill. He’s one of the NFL’s very best at his position and will give quarterback Tua Tagovailoa another deep threat. A revamped offensive line and some new strategies there could be another boost for a Miami team that is coming off a 9-8 season.

Expectations are high for the Cincinnati Bengals. They shocked the NFL last season by winning gritty playoff games and advancing to their first Super Bowl in 33 years. The overachieving Bengals, behind star quarterback Joe Burrow and one of the best trio of receivers in the league, are out to show last season wasn't a one-off. They want to show they are built to last. Three new offensive linemen picked up via free agency should help keep Burrow's uniform a little cleaner and open up the running game for Joe Mixon.

The Los Angeles Chargers will have at least five new starters on defense, which means that getting everyone on the same page will be a priority during training camp. The key camp battles will be who starts at right offensive tackle as well as finding a backup running back. Off the field, the Chargers would also like to get an extension completed with safety Derwin James before the end of camp. James is in the final season of his rookie contract.
